This month was initiated by historian Carter G. Woodson out of a concern that the contributions of Black Americans were overlooked or misrepresented. He selected February because it included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14), who both dramatically impacted the lives of African Americans. Each year a new theme is chosen for African American History Month and the 2007 theme is "From Slavery to Freedom."

African American buying power will increase to $1,023 billion in 2010 equaling an 8.6% market share and an increase of over 221% since 1990. Currently African American's represent approximately 12% of the overall labor force with over 8% employed in management, professional and related occupations. While we celebrate African American History at Pulte, we also anticipate our future with strong, passionate, dedicated employees who truly are driving success at Pulte Homes. As Helen Hampton, Director of Training, Home Office, puts it, "Pulte is filled with passionate, smart, fun loving people who live to win. Open and candid dialogue is the norm...I have always felt free to be myself." We understand that embracing diversity and creating an inclusive culture at Pulte is a journey rather than a destination, but with people like Helen, Wilkins, Wy and Calvin the journey is more like a very cool road trip!
